Editorial Policy

Know What Is Editorial, Commercial, and Vendor Supplied.

This policy explains how HowToBuySaaS handles software reviews, comparisons, product information, sponsorships, affiliate relationships, vendor submissions, corrections, and the separation between public editorial content and private marketplace activity.

Policy version: September 2026
Policy purpose

One Website, Several Different Types of Information

HowToBuySaaS operates software discovery resources, editorial content, vendor-facing commercial services and a private SaaS marketplace. This policy exists so readers can understand which type of information they are viewing and what commercial relationship, if any, sits behind it.

ED

Editorial Content

Reviews, comparisons, alternatives, buying guides and other research-led content where HTBS is responsible for the editorial analysis and conclusion.

VS

Vendor-Supplied Information

Product descriptions, features, pricing information, profile updates or other factual material submitted by a software vendor or its authorized representative.

SC

Sponsored Content

Content or placement involving a commercial relationship. Sponsored material should be disclosed and is not presented as an undisclosed independent editorial recommendation.

AF

Affiliate Content

Editorial content may contain affiliate links through which HTBS can receive a commission if a reader purchases from the linked provider.

PL

Public Product Listings

Directory or product-profile information intended to help users discover software. Being listed, claimed or promoted does not itself constitute an HTBS editorial endorsement.

PM

Private Marketplace Information

Founder, investor, buyer and transaction information used within HTBS private marketplace workflows and governed separately from public editorial content.

Review methodology

How HTBS Approaches Software Reviews

Research depth can vary by article and product. We therefore distinguish between vendor-reported product facts, information checked against available sources, direct observations where testing actually occurred, and HTBS editorial analysis.

01 Identify the product and use case

Establish what the software is designed to do, which category it belongs to and the type of buyer or workflow the article is evaluating.

02 Check first-party product information

Official vendor websites, pricing pages, documentation and product materials are preferred for current features, plans and integrations where available.

03 Separate facts from analysis

Product capabilities or pricing should be distinguishable from HTBS commentary about buyer fit, trade-offs, usefulness or limitations.

04 Disclose the depth of evaluation

If HTBS directly tests a product, that can be stated. If the article is based on research and available documentation, it should not imply hands-on testing.

05 Check commercially important details

Pricing, plan availability, integrations and other changeable details should be sourced or dated where practical, while readers should still verify final vendor terms.

06 Publish the editorial conclusion

The conclusion should reflect the evidence reviewed for that article rather than a commercial requirement from an advertiser, affiliate partner or software vendor.

HTBS does not use one universal scoring formula for every software product.

Different products and categories require different decision criteria. An SEO platform, accounting product, helpdesk and AI writing tool cannot meaningfully be evaluated using an identical weighting system.

If a particular review, comparison or ranking uses a numeric score or weighted methodology, that page should explain the criteria and basis for that score rather than relying on an undisclosed universal formula.

Comparisons and alternatives

Different Buyers Can Reach Different Conclusions

HTBS comparisons and alternatives content should help readers understand differences rather than manufacture a universal winner where buyer requirements materially change the answer.

Comparisons

Side-by-side evaluation

Products should be evaluated against criteria relevant to the comparison, such as use case, features, pricing structure, integrations, implementation considerations and intended buyer.

  • Use the same meaningful criteria for the compared products.
  • Separate current product facts from editorial interpretation.
  • Show source dates where changing information materially affects the comparison.
  • Do not create a winner purely because one product has more features.
Alternatives

Candidate discovery, not automatic replacement

An alternative is a product worth evaluating against a stated requirement. Inclusion on an alternatives page does not mean HTBS guarantees that it is a superior replacement.

  • Explain why a product is a relevant alternative.
  • Consider switching requirements and important workflow differences.
  • Avoid presenting commercial participation as evidence of product superiority.
  • Encourage verification of current vendor terms before purchase.
Commercial relationships

Payment Can Buy a Commercial Service. It Cannot Buy an Editorial Conclusion.

HTBS operates commercial services for SaaS companies. Those services need to be distinguishable from independent editorial analysis so readers can understand the context in which content or placement appears.

Sponsored content

Commercially supported content

Content created or published as part of a sponsorship or paid content arrangement should be disclosed as sponsored or otherwise commercially supported.

Sponsorship does not convert the material into an independent HTBS editorial review.
Advertising

Paid visibility

Advertising, newsletter sponsorship and other promotional inventory may provide visibility to a vendor but do not guarantee favorable editorial coverage, ranking or review conclusions.

Advertising placement and editorial evaluation are separate decisions.
Paid review relationship

Payment does not buy a positive outcome

If a commercial fee is associated with a review-related service, research or production workflow, the commercial relationship should be disclosed where applicable.

A vendor cannot purchase a guaranteed positive opinion, predetermined rating or top editorial position.
Affiliate

Commission-bearing links

HTBS may earn a commission when readers purchase through some links. Affiliate relationships do not determine the editorial opinion expressed in an article.

Affiliate Disclosure: HowToBuySaaS may earn a commission if you purchase through links in this article. This does not influence our editorial opinions or product comparisons.
Vendor participation

Vendor Input Is Useful, but It Is Not Automatically Editorial Evidence

Software companies often know their own product information best. HTBS may therefore use vendor-provided information while keeping its origin clear and retaining responsibility for how that information is presented.

Product information

Vendor-supplied facts

Vendors may provide product descriptions, current pricing, plan details, screenshots, integration information, release updates and other materials.

  • Vendor claims should not automatically be described as independently verified.
  • HTBS may edit submitted information for clarity, formatting and relevance.
  • Material factual claims can be checked against available official sources where appropriate.
  • Misleading or unsupported claims may be removed or rewritten.
Listings

Listing is not endorsement

A SaaS product can appear in the HTBS directory because it is relevant to the platform or because a vendor has created, claimed or commercially supported a listing.

  • Being listed does not mean HTBS certifies the product.
  • A claimed profile establishes profile-management rights, not editorial endorsement.
  • Paid visibility does not establish product superiority.
  • Editorial reviews and rankings remain separate from profile ownership.
Contributors and third-party material

External Contributions Must Still Meet HTBS Standards

HTBS may receive article pitches, contributed material, expert commentary or other content from people outside the internal editorial team. Submission does not guarantee publication.

Editorial contribution

Relevance before publication

Contributed material should fit the HTBS audience and provide useful software, SaaS, AI, business, founder or related industry information rather than existing primarily to place a promotional link.

  • Content may be edited or declined.
  • Originality and useful reader value are expected.
  • Commercial relationships should be disclosed.
  • A contributor does not control HTBS editorial conclusions.
Commercial contribution

Paid content is treated as paid content

If publication occurs because of a commercial arrangement, the relationship should be disclosed and any paid outbound links handled according to the HTBS paid-link policy.

  • Payment does not transform sponsored material into independent editorial coverage.
  • HTBS may reject low-value or irrelevant submissions.
  • Commercial content must still provide a legitimate reader purpose.
  • Search ranking benefit is not an editorial product sold by HTBS.
Private marketplace separation

Private Deal Information Is Not Public Editorial Content

Marketplace information follows separate workflows.

Information submitted by founders, investors and acquirers for SaaS sale, fundraising, investment or acquisition activity is handled for the applicable private marketplace process rather than for public editorial publication.

HTBS marketplace review, access and information-sharing practices are governed by the dedicated marketplace and confidentiality policies. A marketplace listing or introduction is not an editorial recommendation, investment recommendation, valuation or guarantee of transaction quality.

Corrections and maintenance

Software Changes. Published Information Can Become Outdated.

HTBS may correct or update material information when needed.

Software pricing, features, plan limits, company positioning and integrations can change after publication. HTBS therefore does not promise that every article is continuously updated in real time.

  • Material factual errors can be corrected.
  • Outdated information may be updated when identified.
  • Vendors and readers may submit correction requests.
  • A correction request does not guarantee that the requesting party controls the final wording.
  • Commercial payment is not required to submit a factual correction.
Conflicts of interest

Commercial Context Should Be Visible Where It Matters

HTBS operates both editorial and commercial activities. The appropriate response to that reality is disclosure and separation, not pretending that no commercial relationships exist.

01

Sponsor Relationships

Relevant sponsorship or advertising relationships should be disclosed when they materially affect the context in which content appears.

02

Affiliate Relationships

Affiliate commissions may exist on editorial pages, but they do not purchase a guaranteed positive conclusion or predetermined comparison result.

03

Vendor Relationships

A vendor may simultaneously have a listing, advertising relationship or other commercial interaction with HTBS. That relationship does not itself establish an editorial recommendation.

Policy questions

Editorial Policy FAQ

Can a SaaS vendor pay for a positive HTBS review or top ranking?

No. A commercial arrangement may pay for an eligible advertising, sponsorship, production or promotional service, but it does not purchase a guaranteed favorable editorial opinion, predetermined score or top editorial ranking.

Does HTBS personally test every software product it writes about?

No blanket hands-on testing claim is made. Research depth varies by article. Direct testing should only be described when it actually occurred; otherwise articles may rely on official product information, available documentation and editorial research.

Does HTBS use the same score for every software category?

No. HTBS does not claim one universal weighted scoring formula for every product category. Where a specific article uses scoring, the basis should be explained in that article.

Are sponsored and affiliate pages allowed on HTBS?

HTBS may publish commercially supported content and may use affiliate links. Relevant commercial relationships should be disclosed, and paid outbound links should follow the applicable HTBS link-qualification policy.

Does paying for a product listing mean HTBS endorses the software?

No. Listing, claiming or promoting a product profile does not itself constitute an HTBS editorial endorsement, certification or recommendation.

Can a vendor request a factual correction?

Yes. Vendors and readers can submit factual correction requests without purchasing advertising or another commercial service. HTBS retains responsibility for the final published wording.

Are private marketplace listings part of HTBS editorial rankings?

No. Private sale, fundraising, investment and acquisition workflows are separate from public software editorial content and are governed by the applicable marketplace policies.
